rs will now be able to pay for a position on Reddit’s trending page with a service called “Trending Takeover.” Due to this, it is expected that s will start to see brand curated posts appear in the site’s search tab and Popular feed. These ads will have a promoted marker to keep readers aware of branded content.
In addition to a spot on the trending page, rs will be able to use personalized keywords and target specific subreddits to get their messages to those who are most likely to read them. In the closed beta test, partners saw click-through rates that were double the industry standard. Currently, rs can use Trending Takeover for up to twenty-four hours, and spots are sold based on reservations, likely due to the limited space. Trending Takeover’s closest relative is Product Tags, which exist on Facebook.
According to an official Reddit blog posting, Trending Takeover is aimed at giving rs “access to millions of Reddit s who are in an active, information-gathering mindset.” Reddit previously allowed rs to promote their content in individual subreddits with individual Reddit posts or links to external content. When clicked, Trending Takeover links will take the reader to a trending page not dissimilar to the ones already on the site. Reddit gives s the ability to manage the data it collects via the Personalization Preferences page. There, redditors are able to remove the site's ability to use the information it gathers on them from third-party websites and opt-out of the personalization of content in general.
rs Get To Pick Their Audiences
Social media continues to be a market that rs are highly interested in, and while the power that social media gives to a message is difficult to calculate, the allure is hard to ignore. Other sites have taken stands against the proliferation of political ments on their websites, with Facebook famously being reluctant to fact check ads posted to it. Reddit is a massive forum with thousands of focused communities. While that would likely dampen the effect of any ment posted to its trending page, it could also reinforce any falsehoods that a community already believes.
Because of this, Trending Takeover feels like a redundancy. rs could already reach out to the many communities on the site, and have their messages appear there. If a relevant community doesn’t already exist, they could use the tools that Reddit already provides and reach out to specific subreddits that might be interested in the product. With all else failing, start their own Reddit community.
