Ray Donovan may return to screens via Paramount+ once it merges with Showtime. The series, which premiered on Showtime in 2013, ran for seven seasons and 82 total episodes, eventually going off the air in January 2020. The series followed Liev Schreiber as the title character, a fixer who works with many high-profile clients. The ensemble cast of the series, which was created by Ann Biderman, also included Paula Malcomson, Eddie Marsan, Dash Mihok, Steven Bauer, Katherine Moennig, Pooch Hall, Jon Voight, and Susan Sarandon.
Per a Ray Donovan revival - at an investor meeting. The streaming service is reducing the amount of originals they produce, but as part of their impending merger with Showtime, they are focusing on continuing to bring some of the most popular series from both platforms. According to Bakish, this could potentially include Dexter and "maybe more Ray Donovan." Read his full quote below:
"We fundamentally believe in a broad thesis. So that will work at the consumer level and as part of that, we’re leaning into the Showtime franchises. So you could think about the slate as smaller, which will be less expensive, but also really giving the people what they want — which is more Showtime, maybe more Dexter, maybe more Ray Donovan, and really leaning into that. And we have some exciting plans there."
Ray Donovan Has Never Truly Gone Away
Although no new episodes of Ray Donovan have aired in the past three years, every sign is pointing to the franchise's continued viability. For instance, it already got a follow-up movie, which premiered on Showtime in 2022. That film took the place of the planned Ray Donovan season 8, which would have been its final season.
While that might seem to imply that the Ray Donovan story is well and over, the truth is that it has simply moved. In fact, in just two days on March 10, Netflix will premiere an Indian remake of the series titled Rana Naidu. This shows that the property still holds value globally and on streaming platforms.
If Rana Naidu becomes a hit, it makes sense for Paramount+ to want to make Ray Donovan one of the flagship series for their Showtime merger. It remains to be seen if Schreiber and the Ray Donovan ensemble cast will return. The star recently implied that he would return if executive David Nevins was involved, so there is a roap to getting the show back on the air should the platform decide to go for it.
