Summary

  • Season 2 of NBC's Quantum Leap brings back Raymond Lee as Ben, promising to shake up the show's formula once again.
  • The reboot series invests a considerable amount of time in its characters, adding more character drama than the original series.
  • Season 2 will follow the narrative format of the original run, focusing more on emotionally grounded stories and less on the overarching plot.

After the shocking finale of NBC's 2022 reboot anticipation for the Quantum Leap season 2 release date is incredibly high, and what's already been revealed about Raymond Lee's return as Ben already promises to shake up the show's formula once again. Following up on the cult classic show of the same name from the '80s and '90s, NBC's Quantum Leap concerns Dr. Ben Song as he travels through different moments in time hoping to return home. The reboot series used its first season to further explore the science of Project Quantum Leap and took the story to places the original never tread. Despite being a sequel series, Quantum Leap invests a considerable amount of time in its characters, which gives the show its own unique tone.

Available To Stream On Peacock TV

Showing Project Quantum Leap from both Ben's perspective, and from the scientists working in the modern day, the rebooted Quantum Leap injects a lot more character drama in its first season than the original did in its entire five-season run. Also, season 1 added new wrinkles to the science of the project, which allowed for more storytelling possibilities in potential future seasons. Quantum Leap's season 1 ending time-travel twist was not only a shocking moment, but it essentially guaranteed that a second season was needed to continue Ben's adventures. Season 2 of Quantum Leap is now imminent on NBC, and there's plenty that's been revealed about what's next for Raymond Lee's Dr. Ben Song.

Most Recent Quantum Leap Season 2 News

Raymond Lee as Ben Song in Quantum Leap

While the most recent Quantum Leap season 2 news has been dominated by NBC's trailer drop and the impending October release date, the creative team behind the show have revealed some crucial changes in the tone of the 2022 reboot. Showrunner Martin Gero spoke to Entertainment Weekly shortly after the season 2 trailer arrived, and he had some key comments about what to expect from the next season and the changes to the Quantum Leap reboot's formula.

Specifically, season 2 will be following the narrative format of the original 1989-1993 Quantum Leap run. More screen time will be given to the self-contained and emotionally grounded stories of the people Ben assumes the identity of when he leaps, with slightly less focus on the overarching plot of the wider show. “We want to take our incredible cast and give them the ability to do more," Gero explained, "so for us closing the loop on the mythological questions, like 'why did he leap?,' lets us have the serialized elements be more in the emotional space in season 2 as opposed to the heavy plot space.”

NBC Renewed Quantum Leap For Season 2

Long before season 1 finished airing, NBC announced that it had renewed Quantum Leap for a second season. The success of the first season's early episodes was enough to green-light another outing. Interestingly, the announcement came without many of season 1's shocking twists having happened yet. Besides the instant name recognition of a property like Quantum Leap, the brilliant writing and spin on the original concept not only had viewers tuning in for the first few episodes of the rebooted show, but it was clear that the story was building to a crescendo as the season wore on.

Quantum Leap Season 2 Release Date

Quantum Leap Ben and 669 Sign

The release date for Quantum Leap season 2 has been set for October 4, 2023. There’s also a new time slot, as the previous Quantum Leap season aired in the 9:00 PM time slot, but now, Quantum Leap moves to 8:00 PM. That means that season 2 of the series will not have to air behind reruns of other shows while there is less original programming for NBC’s schedule during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

The new time slot for Quantum Leap season 2 could work to the show’s advantage. The series hasn’t boosted huge ratings in the past (though it is also available to stream the next day on Peacock, which might mean many viewers are streaming rather than watching live). The earlier time slot means that more viewers might find it instead of turning the TV off during reruns of other shows. Less new scripted content on other networks in the same time slot also means that Quantum Leap won’t have to vie for the attention of a TV audience and might pick up even more viewers.

Quantum Leap Season 2 Cast

Magic talking with the team in Quantum Leap episode 4

The Quantum Leap season 2 cast of regulars will likely be the same as season 1. Unlike the original Quantum Leap, which was mostly a two-character story with only Dr. Sam Beckett and Al Calavicci returning each week, the reboot introduced compelling characters like Magic (Ernie Hudson) and Ian (Mason Alexander Park), who offer to Ben (Raymond Lee) and Addison (Caitlin Bassett), as well as the head of security, Jenn (Nanrisa Lee). There has been no indication that Quantum Leap's main cast and characters would not return for season 2.

The confirmation of a secret leaper on Quantum Leap during season 1 also opened the door for the introduction of more characters in the second season. Leaper X was played by Walter Perez in the first season, and though he's been lost to time in the season 1 finale, that doesn't mean he won't be back. Meanwhile, the potential of Scott Bakula's return as Dr. Sam Beckett was not ruled out by the finale of the original series.

There have also been several new cast being introduced for season 2 of Quantum Leap. The announcement was made at 2023’s San Diego Comic Con that Melissa Roxburgh will appear in the first episode of the season. Roxburgh is best known for her role as Michaela Stone in Manifest, which ended its run on Netflix in 2023. UnReal's Francois Aranud, Blindsport's Aaron Abrams, and P.J. Byrne of Big Little Lies fame are also confirmed to be appearing.

Also ing the Quantum Leap cast in season 2 is Eliza Taylor, most known for playing Griffin in The 100, as Hannah Carson. Finally, NBC also announced (via TVLine) that Peter Gadiot, known most for playing Adam in Yellowjackets and Shanks in the Netflix live-action One Piece cast, will be appearing as U.S. Army Officer Tom Westfall.

What Quantum Leap Season 2's Story Could Be

A composite image of Ben from Quantum Leap

The ending of Quantum Leap season 1 showed that Ben hadn't made it home yet, leading to more unknown leaps for the Quantum Leap season 2 story. Though he averted disaster, there was still much for him to do. Unlike the original series, the reboot has allowed Ben to travel to the future, which could take season 2 in an entirely different direction than the franchise has gone before.

It's been confirmed that Quantum Leap season 2 will take a more episodic nature with its storytelling, closer matching the original show. As for a potential overarching, the revelation that the government has plans to control time will most likely continue to dominate the B-plots as Ben goes about his usual leaps. With Ben's leaping almost causing World War 3 in season 1, he may also have to contend with the consequences of changing time in Quantum Leap season 2's story.

Another thing that will definitely be explored further in the second season of Quantum Leap is Ben's relationship with Addison. Quantum Leap, season 1, episode 18, "Judgment Day," showed the romantic side of the pairing, and it added another compelling wrinkle. Because the show deals with time travel, Quantum Leap season 2 could also see the return of Leaper X in one form or another, and he could serve as a permanent villain for the run of the series.

Quantum Leap Season 2 Trailer

Raymond Lee in Quantum Leap

NBC released the Quantum Leap season 2 trailer in mid-September 2023, with only a few weeks to go before the October premiere. The trailer reveals several years Ben will jump to in the second season of Quantum Leap, including 1879, 1998, 1943, 2012, 196, and an unspecified date in the future. At only a minute long the Quantum Leap season 2 trailer is brief, but it's rammed with quick snippets of the various locations and times Ben will be jumping to — including Area 51.

While the trailer didn't give away many plot elements of the overarching Quantum Leap season 2 story, it did reveal a few key details. For example, it's shown from the off that Ben will be revealing his time-travel secret to Hannah Carson, the character played by The 100's Eliza Taylor. What's also clear from NBC's Quantum Leap season 2 trailer is that, after the epic cliffhanger finale of the prior season, Ben's next leap wasn't the leap home.
