The purple circle on the Stories page can appear either with or without a lock. A purple ring with a lock means that the has been added to the person's Private Story. This means that the person allows only select s to see their story. Once a views a Private Story, the ring and lock will turn gray, just like a regular viewed Snapchat Story.
