The Purge aired its season two finale on USA December 17, 2019, but will a third season happen? A beloved horror franchise, The Purge has released four movies and two seasons of a namesake television series.

Season one focused on a single night, Purge Night, and followed individuals and groups as they tried their best to survive rampant violence in their city, all of which, as lore has made familiar, is legal for a 12 hour period. Season two gave audiences a peek at what happens the rest of the year, after Purge Night, but wrapped up with an explosive finale that shows the events of Purge Night, which many had been planning for throughout the previous nine episodes. Both seasons were unrelated, at least as far as character overlap is concerned, but worked in tandem to expand the overall universe and lore that the movies created.

Will The Purge TV series be back for another round of episodes? The Purge 5 will release in 2020; and is expected to wrap up the film franchise, but will the TV spinoff also come to an end?

The Purge Season 3 Isn't Happening

The Purge Season 2 Episode 7

Sadly, The Purge has been officially canceled by USA as of May 2020, meaning there definitely won't be a season 3. The series is unlikely to be shopped to a different network, as NBC Universal owns it. While ratings took a huge dive in season 2, and The Purge was also expensive to produce, the primary reason for its cancellation is said to be an overall programming shift by USA away from scripted originals and toward live and unscripted programs.

What The Purge Season 3 Could've Been About

The Purge Season 2 Promo

Season two of The Purge television series showed that, post Purge Night, a faction of resistance fighters have formed after news of the NFFA (New Founding Fathers of America) targeting and killing civilians off-Purge surfaced. This faction could lead into the events of The Purge: Election Year, which saw a candidate, Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), running for President to overthrow the NFFA and abolish The Purge. Since Roan was elected at the end of Election Year, it's possible she succeeded in abolishing The Purge. Since the resistance faction is newly established at the end of season two, their formation could be a pre-cursor to Roan's overall platform, and could point to why and how she decided to run for office in the first place.

However, as both seasons have been different in timeline and disconnected other than the fact they exist within the same universe, season three of The Purge television series could've gone a different route entirely. The show has played with the overall timeline of The Purge franchise through various time jumps, flashbacks, and a sense of vagueness regarding when, exactly, the seasons take place and how long The Purge has been happening.
