One of the memorable scenes in Reservoir Dogs but his breakthrough came two years later with Pulp Fiction. The movie follows various interconnected stories in a non-linear style set in the criminal underworld of Los Angeles.
Two of the leads are hitmen Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and they got themselves into trouble when Vincent accidentally shot a man named Marvin in the face in their car. So, they took the car to a professional cleaner, Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel), so he could help them fix their mess. The victim was in the apartment of some people who stole a valuable briefcase from Marsellus Wallace, Vincent and Jules's boss. After they killed everyone involved, why did Jules and Vincent take Marvin with them in Pulp Fiction?
Marvin Was Jules And Vincent's Informant
The start of Jules and Vincent’s story follows them as they arrive at Brett's apartment, one of Marsellus' business partners who tried to double-cross him. Jules and Vincent were sent there to retrieve a briefcase and eliminate Brett and his friends, which they did. However, Marvin proved to be the only survivor of that visit. The reason why they took Marvin in Pulp Fiction was that Jules knew him. He was the sole survivor of the early bloodbath to kickstart Quentin Tarantino's kill count in Pulp Fiction. On their way back, Jules talked to Vincent about surviving when one of Brett's men opened fire on them.
Vincent turned around to ask Marvin’s opinion and accidentally shot him in the face. Though it wasn’t explicit in the movie, Marvin was Jules' informant, which is why they didn’t kill him initially. The big question is - did Vincent shoot Marvin on purpose? Vincent says Jules “probably went over a bump or something” but when looking closely at the scene, they never hit a bump. Vincent made a lot of mistakes in Pulp Fiction, so it could have been an accident. Tarantino told the ReelBlend podcast that he “loves any scenario” about the scene, and wants to leave it open to interpretation.
Marvin Isn't The Only Pulp Fiction Mystery
Tarantino is known to leave the audience talking about the mysteries in his films. Why they took Marvin in Pulp Fiction is just one of those. There is the Mia overdose scene, which has several questions in its own right. Fans still debate the contents of Marsellus’ briefcase. Some even think it was his soul, which takes the movie to a new level. When it comes to Marvin's death scene in Pulp Fiction, it's up to the viewer to decide if Vincent shot him as revenge or accidentally Regardless, it's these head-scratching moments that make Pulp Fiction a movie people still talk about today.
