Reservoir Dogs, and while it was well-received, his big break arrived two years later with another crime movie: Pulp Fiction.
Pulp Fiction follows different characters in different segments and in a non-linear narrative, with these segments presented out of order. These characters are hitmen Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson), their boss Marsellus Wallace (Wing Rhames), his wife Mia (Uma Thurman), and boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), with all their stories connected and forming one coherent story in which they all play an important role. Pulp Fiction was a critical and commercial success, with Tarantino winning different awards and the movie being praised for its story, characters, and structure, and it’s often regarded as his masterpiece.
Although none of its main actors were newcomers, Pulp Fiction certainly boosted their careers in different ways – for example, it’s the movie that revived John Travolta’s career and the one that made Uma Thurman a widely known name. Thurman’s performance as Mia Wallace is often referenced and parodied in other media, and as hard as it is to imagine someone else playing the character, Thurman wasn’t the only option for the role. Here are the actresses who almost played Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction.
Pulp Fiction: Michelle Pfeiffer Could’ve Played Mia Wallace
Prior to Uma Thurman’s casting as Anastasia.
Next was Daryl Hannah, who became widely known in the 1980s for playing Madison in Splash. Hannah didn’t get to play Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction but later ed the Shameless, where she played Sheila Gallagher. All these actresses were interviewed for the role of Mia Wallace, and they all ed on it for different (and unknown) reasons, and other names said to have been in consideration are Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Alfre Woodard, Halle Berry, and Rosanna Arquette (who was part of the movie anyway as she played Jody).
However, Tarantino reportedly preferred Michelle Pfeiffer for the role, and she’s among those who were interviewed for it. Not playing Mia Wallace in Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she plays Janet Van Dyne, and she’ll play Betty Ford in the series The First Lady. In the end, Uma Thurman turned out to be the best option to play the role, and it opened many doors for her in her career, appearing in movies like Batman & Robin, Gattaca, and Les Misérables, and became a frequent collaborator of Quentin Tarantino, starring in both Kill Bill movies.
