With nearly three years gone since the last movie premiered, Kurt Fuller offers an uncertain update on Psych 4 has remained in a state of development limbo due to a variety of reasons.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant for Evil season 4, Fuller was asked for an update on Psych 4's development. The actor, who plays the off-kilter coroner Woody in the franchise, sounded uncertain about the movie's chances, citing financial decisions as the biggest speed bump it faces in entering production after filming failed to begin in 2023. He does, however, remain hopeful it will get made, even going on to share what he's heard about the script for the next installment. See what Fuller shared below:

Kurt Fuller: I've heard the script is done, I've heard it's hilarious. Maggie Lawson, we talk almost every day, and she's read it. I think it was about to be done, and then all the strikes happened. Everybody was reevaluating streaming, and I think the money wasn't there at the end of last year. I don't know whether Peacock or Universal are gonna go in that direction anymore, I don't know. I think it was very close to being done and starting, and then at the last minute, it sort of surprised everybody when they said, "You know, we can't do it now. We're out of money".

We just did a convention in Chicago. All of us got together, which was unbelievable, and the enthusiasm was unbelievable. So we'll see, you just don't know. It's just like Evil. I mean, my god, the enthusiasm has never been greater for Evil now. So, you know, show business is weird, it changes day to day, and takes huge swings, so you just never know. They've had success with all the Psych movies, I know the numbers. And I hope that CBS sees how well Evil is doing and says, "Hey, we can make some more." You know, it couldn't hurt. It would only make people happy.

Psych 4 Seems More Likely Thanks To Another Show's Recent Return

Fuller's updates regarding Psych 4 largely line up with those shared by James Roday Rodriguez, the franchise's co-lead and co-writer for the previous three movies, and Timothy Omundsen in the past year or so. Omundsen, in particular, told Screen Rant in January 2024 that Peacock did not have the money to produce the fourth movie following the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and that he and the reset of the team behind the franchise were waiting for an official greenlight from the streamer to proceed. I think it might have even been when they wrote Psych 3, I think it might have been a three-parter, so they switched that around to get ready for Psych 4. Because I think they didn't have the money at the time to do two episodes when we did 3. So yeah, 4 was pretty much in the pipeline and ready to go, and they just made some adjustments to it, from what I've been told. We have a Psych family text thread that we all chime in on. And we all talk several times a week, and, of course, during the holidays, and we are all prepped and ready to go. I mean, not prepped, but we are all primed and ready and excited. We're all chomping at the bit and waiting to start running once we hear they got that green light.

But while the wait for finances may seem like a hefty hurdle for the movie to overcome, Psych 4 may find its way to entering production sooner than later thanks to the recent success of Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie. Similarly expanding a long-running USA Network show into a feature-length format following its series finale, the movie scored widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike, proving the audience appetite is still there for off-beat mystery procedurals.

Though viewership numbers have not yet been shared for the Monk movie, should it have been successful on that front, it would be a major boon for Peacock to greenlight Psych 4. Additionally, with NBCUniversal also expanding fellow USA Network titles Suits and White Collar years after their finales, it seems the studio is very interested in mining the material that has worked for them in the past. Plus, with Fuller's indication that the first three Psych movies were hits, chances remain promising that the fourquel comes to fruition.
