While a leak of games for PS Plus has revealed that Star Wars: Battlefront II is ing the service's library of games, it may not be the version that fans expect. While the EA-published Battlefront II is the most recent version, having released in 2017 as a sequel to the original Battlefront reboot, the series dates back to the era of the Playstation 2, and has had a presence on Xbox, DS, and PC platforms as well.
As reported by remaster mod for the original Battlefront 2, it may not come as a surprise that the game is planned for PS Plus, as a temporarily active PlayStation Store page seems to have suggested. However, the page, which has since been taken down, did specifically list the game as the portable version, noting that it "originally released on the PSP." Notably, the page also listed several enhanced features, including "up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters."
PlayStation Store Leak Points to PSP Version of Battlefront II for PS Plus
While the original Battlefront II remains a classic fan-favorite, re-releasing the PSP version may prove an unpopular decision. Compared to the original game's release on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, the portable version garnered somewhat less positive reviews, and is also the only version of the game to not include the Rise of the Empire campaign, instead opting for three single-player modes. Additionally, with the original releases still having enough of an audience for Battlefront II to receive an update years later, it remains to be seen whether the PS Plus release of the game will gain any traction.
While the decision to release the PSP version of Battlefront II seems like an odd one, there may be a reason; the PSP version of the game does have significant differences from the PC and console releases. With the game still playable on platforms like Steam, bringing the PSP release forward to PS Plus Classic could be a way of bringing back the only version that is currently inaccessible to modern audiences. Additionally, with the modern, EA-published reboot still available, the decision could serve to further differentiate the classic release.
In spite of the leak, no official announcement has yet been made - although with Battlefront 3 from EA apparently not in development, the time seems right for the series to get some attention. Although the PSP version may seem like an odd choice, there could be some fans who would enjoy the chance to try an alternate version of the classic game. Whatever the case, more details about PS Plus's December offerings, potentially including Star Wars: Battlefront II, will likely be given soon.
