I don't care what race you are, do you convey the emotion and gravity of the character? Can you convince me that you are that person in how the creators envisioned?

A good example is the live action series on Netflix. I was very disappointed with the portrayal of Katara. The actress who played her didn't convey the strength and emotional fortitude that makes Katara who she is. Katara is the most powerful water bender because she has a ionate heart like a fire bender.

Her bending is fueled by her empathy, a quality that was lacking from the live action version, especially with her fight against master Pacu.
