Despite it being over 20 years old at this point, I'm always an advocate for .HACK//Sign. A story set in an MMORPG, it predates Sword Art Online and other similar series, and has a heavy focus on character, worldbuilding, and the core mystery at the center of the series. It also deals with some of my favorite sci-fi themes regarding AI.
