What I thinking when I watched the first episode of TNG and we saw Wesley for the first time was "Great. Yet another TV show with a teenage genius." TV in the late 80s was full of teenage boy geniuses. It wasn't so much that people specifically hated Wesley Crusher. Everyone hated the fact that half the shows on TV had a teenage boy genius character just like Wesley Crusher.
