I think Nicky Spencer is not Aaron's biological son. It's possible that his wife has had the affair for a long time and that Nicky is not his own.
It's unfortunately true that there may be (albeit rare) parents who would be capable of physically hurting their own child, however sick that is, but I have a feeling Nicky is not Aaron's biological child and that he probably really wants this child dead.
