The older I get, the more I come to believe that people are focused way too much on the idea of canon such that for some, it comes across more like a religion than a fandom. Canon is limiting in a variety of ways and leaves out the possibility of "new" ideas entering the zeitgeist. By focusing on the existing "fanbase" you never take the chances that might allow you to both grow your audience, and for your fanbase to grow as humans. I this author's take.
