See AllXena Star Lucy Lawless Reflects On Her Warrior Princess Character's Death 23 Years Later
A DEVASTINGLY RUINED BIRTHDAY!
The ending was devastating and a betrayal of the fans. I still blow my top when I think about these 2 eps and while I get the whole "muse" thing when as a writer "the muse" keeps bugging you to write what is in your head, this script should have never seen the light of day once it was finished. First reason I blow my top, the blame falls at Robert's feet as he was 1 of the writers, the show's producer AND probably the 1 who pitched the episode to Lucy and Renee. My philosophy is write it to get it out then think of your fan base and burn it. Second reason I blow my top is all those conventions that I and others went to where the cast and Robert Tapert stood on a stage and point blank "LIED!!!!!" to the fans and I quote "We won't be killing Xena off."
Third reason is what my first sentence says. The last episode was aired on my birthday and completely ruined my day. To this day I have never watched the last two episodes after the first time. I would have preferred they ended the show with "Many Happy Returns" which by the way is my least favorite episode of the series. And would have been ESTACTIC with "When Fates Collide."
One saving thing is that over the years, I have seen film footage of Lucy apologizing for the effect on the fans and having regrets for killing Xena off.
