He was successful in the time travel engineering and development, so I wouldn't say he "squandered" the family fortune. Achieving rapid time travel to the future or past using a DeLorean is quite the feat. Maybe he could have managed the funds better or found other sources of income to replenish his cash but I suspect time travel development would be astronomical in cost.
