The entire point of St. Elmo's Fire was to explore the myth that by graduating college, you were automatically transformed into an adult, with corresponding behaviors. There is no " one size fits all " approach to adulthood and the characters in this film are all flawed in some way, as are we all. Kirby was a stalker,even then. We all knew that. We knew each character was a mess.
