Greta Gerwig's Narnia Remake Needs Radical Casting Thanks To One Of The Harshest Realities It Faces
This is certainly a possibility. But if they go this route, the only reason to cast a woman is to create controversy/buzz. I don't appreciate cynicism all that much, especially with this IP.
Greta Gerwig's Narnia Remake Needs Radical Casting Thanks To One Of The Harshest Realities It Faces
"The film could put some new twists on the characters with a unique casting, but as long as the heart of the story remains largely the same, and Gerwig understands the source material and delivers a faithful adaptation, the new movies can be a huge success."
Is this a joke?
Is it the contention of this writer that a happening, as experienced by a man, is not very different from the exact same happening, experienced by a woman? I say that we have very different experiences in the world, everything else being equal.
But then there's the fact that Aslan IS Jesus. And way too many of us know this. Aslan cannot be voiced by a woman, unless the goal is to have existing fans decide to not see this movie. This is not sexist. Even if I was not a Christian and a big fan of Narnia, I am, like many, extremely tired of two trends in Hollywood: 1) Very little original content. Remakes of everything. Everyone has favorite existing IP, and we all like to see those stories brought to life onscreen, if it's done well. But it's starting to feel like laziness. 2) WHEN existing IP is treated anew, it just has to be changed... to fit modern sensibilities, for shock factor to create buzz, to meet some ideal of the director so they can put their stamp on it, etc.
Here's a novel concept: shock people by making a faithful reproduction of the story. We'll never see that coming.
