You know, i'm inclined to wonder if the director just took a bow to the previous movie and said, if you want to watch that, maybe you can watch that....and then watch this. The Demeter movie I watched and I recognize that it was that story of coming over on a ship...
It's a good standalone movie, and for me. I'm glad to have both movies as kind of a collection, even though it's not intuitively that way for a lot of people, because it's not the same director.

You know, even with the reorganization and shuffle of the third one that he did a couple of years back, I still think the third one is weak. But I respect its place in fandom. I bought the 4 K UHD trilogy packet, so I see what you mean. It is masterful.
I don't think this screenwriter critic who wrote the article understands the movie very well, based on how he described everything. It kind of ticks me off.
I when I went and saw that 3rd on 1990, in a theater out in California. It was so weird, we're all stoked about seeing that godfather puppet sign coming up the beginning credits and the trumpet, or whatever it was, doing the Godfather theme. We wooped and clapped.
The only disappointment I have really is Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, who was very stiff as a board. And unfortunately, very prominent in the movie, it was so flat.
But she has moved on and directed some successful films.
