Not sure where you got that Duffy is Reacher's "equal". The entire romantic angle of their relationship has been cringe inducing from her sudden sexual assault on him in the alley to the discussion with Tracy's grandmother about how long they had been together. It's not believable on any level. Stopping the action to explain their relationship to the audience just proves it isn't working.
