I'm glad it was a DeLorean but a refrigerator makes sense in the Fifties they were lined with lead so that means Nuclear Radiation wouldn't affect the person inside...Doc may have believed that if he traveled in the future it could have been affected but World Wide nuclear fallout...Him being involved in the Manhattan Project would leave Him to believe this
