I see Mr. Hulshult's point. Still, what made TOS thrive was Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future. Building on that requires a certain fealty for that vision, which is guided by cannon. I agree about details like The Gorn, PROVIDED those things can be done in a way that does not violate the basic tenets of that vision. Some of the references to cannon, such as changing "General Order Number One," into the "Prime Directive," are downright funny.
While strict adherence to cannon is silly, maintaining the principles of it are not.
