Bear in mind that the different viewpoints in the novel sometimes dictate how Carrie is described. There's a age that details Tommy Ross's perception of her, in which she is described as 'far from repulsive', and the majority of negative descriptions of her come either from her enemies or - most tellingly - from Carrie herself.
