It looks like you didn't quite understand the article. The original timeline refers to the one that unfolds before timeline-altering events happen in the present. A new timeline does not necessarily mean the old one also exists simultaneously. It just means the "original" timeline dissolves while the new one becomes the "original." BTTF's time travel is flawed, so let's not blame the author for writing something fun and speculative.
