Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 is the Finale the Franchise Always Deserved (Review)

Fan-Favorite Characters ROCKY & ADAM Are Officially A Rangers Power Couple
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 – Written By Melissa Flores; Art By Simona Di Gianfelice, Raúl Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, & Ed Dukeshire
The depiction of the couple holding hands in Darkest Hour #1 confirms what seemed to have been implied for some time.
In the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers television series, Rocky and Adam were always depicted as close friends, having moved from Stone Canyon to Angel Grove together for the Team Ninja Competition, and subsequently replaced original Power Rangers Jason and Zack on the team at the same time. They continued to be frequently paired together onscreen and in Boom! Studios subsequent lore-redefining comic book run, it seems like there were repeated subtle suggestions that the two were more than just friends and teammates.
In the lead-up to the comic series' conclusion, both were kidnapped by Dark Specter, sharing a cell together before they were brainwashed into Dark Specter's Zombie Army. When Aisha broke their spell, the way both Rangers fell appeared as if they were reaching out for each other's hands. Subsequently, another detail that might have been easy to miss came when the Rangers checked on Rocky, while he was suffering from PTSD; afterward, all but Adam left Rocky's house. The depiction of the couple holding hands in Darkest Hour #1 confirms what seemed to have been implied for some time.
As unexpected as Rocky and Adam's relationship becoming canon within the franchise might be to some, it is a welcome addition to the franchise, and a great evolution of their long-time dynamic.

Bringing Vital Representation To The Franchise

How Power Rangers Can Fix Its Biggest LGBTQ+ Mistake
Almost three decades later, Power Rangers needs to address its past mistakes and continue to promote representation of the LGBTQ+ community.
As unexpected as Rocky and Adam's relationship becoming canon within the franchise might be to some, it is a welcome addition to the franchise, and a great evolution of their long-time dynamic. Notably, even fans have "shipped" these two together online previously, making this a realization of longstanding potential. Representation, especially using two prominent characters, is vital for Power Rangers. While not the first LGBTQ+ couple in Power Rangers history – that honor goes to Dino/Cosmic Fury's Fern and Izzy – certainly the more visibility in the franchise, the stronger it becomes.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 is available now from BOOM! Studios.
