Warning: contains spoilers for Power Rangers #18

While the Power Rangers face some of the most terrifying monsters imaginable during their universe-saving missions, some of their villains’ names are absolutely ridiculous. However, as confirmed in the latest chapter of the Power Rangers adventures, those outrageous names aren’t the monsters’ fault, but another layer of humiliation added to their inevitable defeat by the hands of the Power Rangers.

In the current state of the Power Rangers, the entire team of teenage superheroes have given up their normal lives on Earth in order to commit full time to being the Power Rangers and protecting the universe from any and all monstrous threats. The reason they made this decision is because of the events of the Elterian War during which the Elterians attempted to conquer all life forms in the universe but were stopped by the full force of the Power Rangers. While the Rangers came out on top, the victory was a narrow one and made the Rangers decide to spend their lives committed to being cosmic heroes. While the future of the Power Rangers is a far cry from their origins, their latest adventures have given readers deeper insight into the monster-fighting methods they’ve exhibited all along, shedding light on one of the weirdest and most hilarious aspects of Power Rangers lore.

In Power Rangers #18 by Ryan Parrott and Marco Renna, the Rangers are called to action after a dragon-like beast is seen wreaking havoc across the cosmos. While the other Rangers investigate another threat that they believe to be related, the yellow and black Rangers, Zack and Trini, face off against the cosmic beast. During the fight, Zack asks Trini what she thinks they should name the creature. Trini is a bit annoyed by the question, asking Zack if it is really the best time to be coming up with monster names while actually fighting the monster in question. Despite Trini’s objections, Zack comes up with the perfect name for the creature, “Terrogon” which is a play on ‘Tarragon’, another name for ‘dragon’.

Power Rangers revealed how their monsters get their names.

The process shown in this issue of the Power Rangers playing word games to name their villains actually perfectly explains the wacky names of some of the monsters they have previously fought. In the past, the Power Rangers have gone up against the likes of Chunky Chicken, Mr. Ticklesneezer, and Knasty Knight, all of whom have absolutely absurd names. The names alone are enough to land these creatures on a list of worst monsters the Power Rangers ever faced. While it was originally implied that those were simply just their names, this issue makes it clear that those were just monikers given to them by teenagers with attitude and a weird sense of humor.

While BOOM! Studios’ Power Rangers series has expanded the established universe in ways that fans couldn't have previously imagined, this revelation is easily one of the most hilariously fitting. The series gave fans deeper insight into the Morphin' Grid and Zordon’s origins as well as the backstory to the villainous Lord Zedd, but explaining the reason behind some of the crazy names of the Power Rangers’ monsters is easily the most fulfilling piece of information to long-time fans as some of them are just absurdly outrageous, and now it is clear why.
