The communicators used by the Power Rangers have a secret ability that was never showcased in the original 1990s television show. It is first revealed in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Pink, where with the help of Trini and Zack, Kimberly tries to stop Goldar and his ally Verto's plot for world domination by using their communicators to create illusions.
Things go haywire for the Rangers in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Pink #3 – written by Brenden Fletcher, Kelly Thompson, and Tini Howard, with art by Daniele Di Nicuolo, color by Sarah Stern, and lettering by Ed Dukeshire – when they are captured by Goldar and Verto. Thankfully, their communicators come in handy for a crafty escape.
Power Ranger Communicators Can Be Used To Create Illusions
In Pink #3, when Kimberly realizes that she still has the emergency communicator given to her by Zordon after she exited the team, she plots with her teammates to escape their captivity. Trini helps Kimberly pull off something audiences have never seen done with the communicators before: project holograms of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. The holograms are convincing enough to distract their enemies, compelling Goldar and Verto to order their fish minions to charge the Rangers. Of course, with no Rangers present, they just charge straight into the cage, hard enough to knock it loose, allowing the prisoners to flee.
The Power Rangers Fool Goldar with Holograms
The Power Rangers' wrist communicators were originally created by Blue Ranger Billy. In addition to a communication device, they also teleport the Rangers to the Command Center when necessary. Keep in mind, these communicators were created in the 1990s. In modern times, since portable cell phones and even Apple wristwatches serve the exact same purpose, there hasn't been a need for communicators in modern Ranger lore. By modern standards, the idea of wrist communicators feels rather outdated. However, the revelation in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Pink #3 that they can do far more for the Rangers than just communicate puts them in perspective.
Perhaps it is time readers rethink the larger significance of the Rangers' communicators, certainly in a modern scope. If they were capable of enforcing useful strategy tactics like holograms this whole time, it is worth wondering what else they are capable of. If not overdue for a comeback in modern Rangerhood, communicators should at least be considered for how significant they were in the 1990s as high-tech gear. It also highlights how impressive the Blue Ranger was, if he could create something so advanced. It may be easy to overlook the Power Rangers' communicators as toys or outdated accessories, but they are more useful than fans give them credit for.
