Warning: SPOILERS for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #106When it comes to BOOM! Studios’ Billy Cranston – who’s typically portrayed as the brains of the group. But just because Billy is the smartest member of the Power Rangers doesn’t make him infallible.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #106 by Melissa Flores and Simona Di Gianfelice features the Power Rangers learning about the ancient Morphin Master ruins that could prove to be the key to the newly upgraded Rita Repulsa’s dark plans. When Power Ranger ally and former Red Ranger Grace Sterling tells the team that her company, Promethea, has already discovered ruins on Earth, an incredulous Billy demands to know why she didn’t say anything sooner. Quickly shutting down the young Power Ranger, Grace simply responds, “I don’t need to run every discover Promethea makes by a teenager, Billy,” ultimately putting the young hero in his place.
The Blue Power Ranger Forgets He’s Just A Kid
Both in the comics and in the original television series, Billy is treated as the smartest person in any room. But while that may be the case when compared to other kids his age, the Blue Ranger is ultimately still just that – a kid. Billy is definitely the brains of the original Power Rangers, creating many of their gadgets like their wrist communicators. He also served as a technical advisor for the team after officially retiring as a Ranger. Billy may be the smartest among his team of Power Rangers, but that doesn’t automatically put him on par with a world-class scientist and full-grown adult like Grace Sterling.
Like manyother aspects of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Billy’s prominent intelligence is really a form of wish-fulfillment for the young target audience of the original television series. But in a comparatively more emotionally grounded setting like the ongoing BOOM! Studios comic, it’s no wonder that Billy would need to be reminded of his own limitations. After all, even for a Power Ranger, intelligence is not the same as maturity.
The Blue Ranger is without a doubt the team’s smartest Power Ranger, but that doesn’t exactly make him a world-class genius. He may be one of the most important of the Teenagers with Attitude, but, ultimately, Billy is still just a teenager, no matter how powerful he is. And just because he’s the big brain of the team doesn’t mean that the Blue Rangers of BOOM Studios’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will automatically have all the answers.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #106 is on sale now from BOOM! Studios.
