Players got a sneak peek of the Gen 9 TCG series at the Pokémon Worlds Championships in London, England. During the annual competition, The Pokémon Company released a brief trailer that showed off the new card designs that will be featured in the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet base set. Popular Pokémon such as Mimikyu, Lucario, and Magnezone were shown off as a glimpse of what collectors can expect from the new TCG generation. The update concluded by revealing that the Gen 9 era of the Pokémon Card Game would be bringing back the EX format, which first made its debut in the Ruby and Sapphire TCG expansion in 2003.

While Nintendo gave fans a glimpse at the base set Pokémon Scarlet and Violet TCG expansion with the Koraidon and Miraidon EX cards, there wasn't a concrete release date for when the new series would launch. However, according to the TCG outlet Poké Beach, the very first Gen 9 Pokémon cards will be available starting on Friday, January 6. The Pokémon Scarlet and Violet TCG collectibles will be a part of a box set that contains the game's first rare holographic Paldea region-themed cards.

Gen 9 Pokémon TCG Releases First Cards In January 2023

Pokemon Scarlet Violet TCG Legendary Koraidon Miraidon

The Scarlet and Violet TCG series' first product is a preview box that features the iconic holographic Koraidon and Miraidon EX cards that were revealed at the Pokémon World Championships in August. The bundle will also come with four Pokémon card booster packs, a jumbo card, and a pin. While not confirmed, it's likely that the preview set will include three promo cards of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Starters Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. When the Pokémon Sword and Shield TCG series launched in 2020, The Pokémon Company released a similar preview box in January of that year that included Galar Starters Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.

If history repeats itself, players will be able to get the first cards of the Gen 9 Starters in the January preview set as well. Based on previous release cycles, it's likely that the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet TCG Base Set expansion will make its debut in February 2023. The Galar region era of the Nintendo tabletop game still has one last expansion left before coming to an end. In November, the Pokémon Silver Tempest TCG set will bring the Sword and Shield series to a close in of mainline expansions. Players who want to get their hands on the first Gen 9 cards as soon as possible, though, can do so with the Pokémon Trading Card Game Scarlet and Violet preview box which hits stores in January 2023.
