Summary

  • Pokémon Journeys concludes Lillie's unresolved storyline by reuniting her with her long-lost father, Mohn, in a satisfying way.
  • Lusamine's character in the anime differs from the games, showing her as a caring conservationist who sacrifices herself for her family.
  • The anime episode "The Homecoming Crown" reveals that Mohn has amnesia, but is reunited with his family thanks to Magearna and a shiny Nihilego.

There's one major storyline of Pokémon Sun and Moon that's left largely unresolved by the game's end, but the anime actually took the time to correct this oversight by having a special Journeys episode focused entirely on drawing Lillie's story to a proper close. This episode saw Lillie reunited with her long-lost father, something that never happens in the games.

In the games and anime alike, it's established that Lillie's father was a man named Mohn, who studied Ultra Wormholes and Ultra Beasts at the Aether Foundation. Through some tragic accident, Mohn was swept away, and thought to be lost forever. In the games, it's revealed that an amnesiac Mohn has been running the Poké Pelago, a small island chain where the player's Pokémon can relax. However, the player has no way to communicate this fact to any of the characters in Sun and Moon.

Pokemon: Lillie and Mohn's Magearna

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, there is a special scene which can be triggered in which Lusamine, Lillie's mother, does find out about Mohn, but Mohn never re his family, and Lusamine decides to let him live his new life, unfettered by the past.

Pokémon Journeys Reunites Lillie's Family in a Satisfying Way

Lillie was a major character in the anime's Sun & Moon series, and her history with her family plays a large role in the plot, much as it does in the games. Lusamine is a very different character in the anime than the games; whereas the game version of her is sinister and selfishly motivated, her anime counterpart is a legitimate conservationist who does care about her family. Both her son, Gladion, and Lillie, are living their lives dealing with the fallout of their father's disappearance, affecting them in different ways, while Lusamine seems oblivious to their suffering.

After Lillie and Gladion are put at risk by an Ultra Wormhole, Lusamine sacrifices herself to save them, being captured by the Ultra Beast Nihilego. They're able to rescue Lusamine, and she rededicates herself to protecting not only her family, but all the Alola region from the Ultra Beasts, forming a group known as the Ultra Guardians. Later, Gladion finds evidence that Mohn might actually still be alive, prompting them to start searching for him. She gives Gladion and Lillie access to Mohn's private laboratory, where they are eventually able to restore the mechanical Pokémon, Magearna.

Throughout the series, Ash Ketchum is ed by many friends who accompany him across the region as they work towards their own goals.

Magearna turns out to be the key to locating Mohn, and so Lusamine, Lillie, and Gladion decide to leave Alola in order to better search for Mohn. In Pokémon Journeys' "The Homecoming Crown," this search ultimately brings them to the Crown Tundra of the Galar region, where they once again run into Ash. There, they discover that Mohn has amnesia, like his game counterpart, but that he has been living with a shiny Nihilego, which he refers to as "Lillie," proving that his memory isn't entirely gone. It's revealed that the Nihilego saved Mohn and tried to take him home, instead ending up here in the Tundra.

Mohn is able to regain his memories once it's revealed Nihilego was blocking them, and the family is finally reunited. They even agree to bring the shiny Nihilego into the family as thanks for all it did to help Mohn, with Gladion capturing it. While the Pokémon anime's version of events is pretty different from the games, it does provide that long-awaited family reunion which players of Sun and Moon never got to see, making this episode worth a watch for anyone who was disappointed with the lack of resolution for Lillie and Gladion.
