Generation One Ghost and Poison-type Pokémon Dynamax Gastly makes its return to Pokémon GO as part of the weekly Max Mondays event, providing trainers with the opportunity to earn one of the game's true powerhouses. Gastly was released in its Dynamax form last year, and its final evolution Gengar is one of the strongest Dynamax Pokémon currently available in Pokémon GO.

Max Mondays continue to take place throughout May as part of the regular Pokémon GO Raid Boss schedule. Between 6pm and 7pm local time each week, one Pokémon that has been released in its Dynamax form is highlighted in Max Battles. Dynamax Gastly will be the central Pokémon on May 12, 2025, and for this hour, it will be the only Pokémon available to capture from Power Spots. While it is not one of the tougher Max Battles, it is still important to know Gastly's weaknesses and resistances before taking it on during Max Monday.

Resistances To Avoid When Selecting Your Team

In all Max Battles, you can take on Dynamax Gastly on your own or alongside up to three other players. You can also now take part in any Dynamax Raids using a Remote Raid after a recent change in Pokémon GO. As a dual-type Pokémon, Gastly has several weaknesses that you can take advantage of when challenging it in a Max Battle. It is weak against Dark-, Ghost-, Ground- and Psychic-type attacks. For all Max Battles, you can only use your own Dynamax or Gigantaxmax Pokémon, which greatly limits the options you have to select for your three Pokémon.

Dynamax Gastly is a Tier 1 Max Battle, meaning you should be able to defeat it on your own as a solo player. It also only costs 250 Max Particles to face off against it.

The line-up you pick is even more important in this Max Battle than in many others, as Gastly takes reduced damage from 6 different types of attacks. It takes 37% less damage from Fairy- and Grass-type attacks and 61% less damage from Bug-, Normal-, and Poison-type attacks. Finally, it takes a massive 75% less damage from any Fighting-type attacks, so these all need to be avoided. Alongside Dynamax Gastly, Grookey, Sableye and Rookidee will all feature as part of Max Mondays this May in their Dynamax form.

Dynamax Gastly Best Counters In Pokémon GO

Four Weaknesses To Aim At

Fortunately, there are Dark-, Ghost-, Ground-, and Psychic-type Dynamax Pokémon, which you can use to dominate Dynamax Gastly. There are limited good Ghost- or Dark-type options that will be the best match-ups for Gastly, but Ground- and Psychic-types will get the job done. Excadrill, as a dual Ground- and Steel-type, is a great counter. It has the fast move Mud Slap, which will quickly get through Gastly's health. The only real Psychic-type option available is Metagross, who can be given the move Zen Headbutt, but it is a very powerful attacker.

Fellow Ghost-types will also take more damage from Dynamax Gastly.

If you do not have access to the above Pokémon, further options can learn either Ground- or Psychic type attacks, which are super-effective against Dynamax Gastly, even if their type itself isn't. These include Gigantamax Kingler, Corviknight, and Gigantamax Lapras. Ghost-type Pokémon aren't the best option, but if you already have a Dynamax Gengar, it will be able to quickly overpower its earlier evolution stage.

How To Beat Arlo In Pokémon GO (May 2025)

GO Rocket Leader Arlo remains a tough test in Pokémon GO, but he can be defeated in May 2025 as long as you use the best counters in your team.

As a backup, any of the other strong attacking Pokémon that Gastly doesn't resist will also be able to win the battle on their own, due to it only being a Tier 1 Max Battle. This includes Legendary Pokémon such as Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres. Gastly should not provide too many problems for Pokémon GO trainers on Max Monday, but by using the best counters, you can make the Max Battle an easy one.
