For a limited time, Pokémon GO is debuting a new Max Battle against Dynamax Entei, the Legendary Fire-type from the Johto region. While only available for a weekend, this version of Entei is a Five-Star boss you can challenge multiple times to add to your roster. With allies at your side, you can pick the right counters for Entei and fulfill different roles to almost guarantee victory every time.

Entei's Max Battle Weekend starts on April 26 at 6:00 AM and ends on April 27, 2025, at 9:00 PM local time. Like all Max Battles in Pokémon GO, you have to find a Power Spot to challenge Entei with at least three other trainers. Only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon are allowed to participate in a Max Battle, so make sure you have at least one first.

Entei is a Fire-type, meaning it has certain type weaknesses and resistances you need to keep in mind when challenging it. As a Fire-type, Entei takes super-effective damage from Ground, Rock, and Water-type moves used against it. On the contrary, Entei resists attacks from the Bug, Fairy, Fire, Grass, Ice, or Steel types, giving it a variety of defenses that can be tricky to breach.

Any of Entei's attacks that target another Pokémon's weakness deal 60% more damage than usual, with even more punishment from Fire-type moves due to Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB). On the other hand, attacks that Dynamax Entei resists only deal 37.5% of their normal damage, making them almost useless. Stick to attacks that deal neutral or super-effective damage to Entei to have the best chances of winning.

Find The Right Team For The Fight

Due to the limited options of available Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon, it is much more important to find the right ones to exploit Entei's weaknesses. Traditionally, Max Battles are much easier when you have 2 Attackers, 1 Tank, and 1 Healer in your group to counter Entei's moves. Unlike Master League fights in Pokémon GO, Dynamax Entei will have ways of using AoE moves to hit every Pokémon on the battlefield, so you need good team synergy to win.

During the duration of the Entei Max Battle Weekend, you can complete Special Research to encounter a Dynamax Sobble before facing the boss. Due to Sobble's Water-type, it can be a perfect counter for Entei you get and empower early. During a Max Battle, you and your allies slowly build up a Max Meter with your Pokémon to perform specific actions. Against Dynamax Entei, you'll have to have Attackers spend Max Meter on Max Attacks for the best damage, while a Tank uses Max Guard for defense and a Healer uses Max Spirit to keep others in the fight.

Gigantamax Blastoise is extremely sturdy alongside Dynamax Blissey, giving your team a bulky defense to resist incoming Fire-type attacks. With Dynamax Excadrill providing more super-effective damage beyond Water-type moves, you should have no trouble taking down Dynamax Entei in short order before the Max Battle Weekend event in Pokémon GO ends.
