In many ways, Kena: Bridge of Spirits feels like a callback to the PS2 platformers like Jak 2 and Ratchet and Clank, only with a lot more modern conveniences and a more engaging world to explore. There are plenty of secrets to uncover, upgrades to unlock, monsters to defeat, and bosses to beat. Its open world is segmented into different areas, which makes exploration far less overwhelming, and it boasts a phenomenal soundtrack that makes every somber moment, a laugh-out-loud joke, and heartfelt goodbye all the more impactful.

9 Animal Well (Billy Basso)

A Hauntingly Beautiful Exploration-Focused Indie

Animal Well is a truly unique Metroidvania that took the world by storm when it launched in early 2024. It promises a small interconnected world full of hauntingly beautiful scenery, secrets to uncover, and a plethora of strange animals to meet. What makes Animal Well so special and garnered it such impressive critical acclaim is its nonlinear approach to exploration and its many unlockables, which players need to use to explore.

There is little to no handholding in Animal Well, with players encouraged to figure out what each upgrade and item does and how it can help them better navigate the mysterious world. Despite its small scale, Animal Well has a breadth of content waiting to be discovered, with players still uncovering new details and secrets to this day. 8 GRIS (Nomada Studio)

A Heartbreaking Indie Masterpiece

Its world slowly opens up to the player as they progress, unlocking new platforming segments and puzzles to solve. There is no real danger or way to fail, only the path ahead for players to follow. GRIS isn't a cozy game as its themes can be incredibly bleak, but it is a beautiful and moving experience that will stick with players long after the credits roll.

7 Paradise Killer (Kaizen Game Works)

An Open World Detective Mystery Game

Paradise Killer is a beautifully bizarre open-world detective game that combines a vaporware aesthetic with an exceptionally written complex murder mystery. Every aspect of Paradise Killer, from its art direction, exploration, world-building, and characters, is phenomenal and coalesces to create one of the best, if not the best, detective games ever made. The open-ended nature of the murder means that players can come to the conclusions they believe are true based on the evidence they successfully find.

Players can, at any moment, accuse any of the various suspects of having committed the murder and end the game there. However, there are plenty of clues and revelations scattered throughout the world, encouraging players to venture out and truly explore their surroundings. Each new piece of evidence is cleverly tracked in the player's log, which they can then use to see whether suspects have new pieces of dialogue. Paradise Killer is a wonderfully crafted game that offers a truly compelling indie experience on PlayStation Plus.

The Ultimate Roguelike Colony Sim

When they're not watching their cult flourish around them, players will need to gather resources and fight enemies in the engrossing roguelike gameplay loop. There are a number of rival cult leaders to defeat, each of which is located in a randomly generated dungeon alongside a slew of other enemies. Additionally, all of this can now be enjoyed in Cult of the Lamb's co-op mode, and there are several DLC that greatly expand upon the already incredible available gameplay.

The colorful aesthetic, great soundtrack, fun premise, and hilarious writing all coalesce to make Tinykin a thoroughly enjoyable indie game that's well worth playing for anyone who is a fan of the Pikmin series or just enjoys a good exploration-focused adventure. Ultimately, adventure is at the heart of Tinykin's design philosophy, and with every new area, puzzle, and platforming sequence, players will feel completely immersed in its delightful world.

3 The Plucky Squire (All Possible Futures)

A Cozy Perspective-Shifting Tale

The Plucky Squire is the very well-reviewed and incredibly creative fantasy adventure indie that plays with perspective unlike any game before it. Much of The Plucky Squire's adorably told narrative takes place in a picture book, with the pages flipping over when players reach the next area or story moment. However, whenever players reach an imable object or need to find a key item to continue the adventure, they can hop out of the book and into the 3D world.

The 3D world takes place in a child's bedroom and is a huge location to explore. Every 2D sprite found in the book has been faithfully recreated in the 3D space, which makes uncovering them and seeing how they all function in both realms a wonderful experience. Once out of the book, fans can use items in the 3D world to help solve puzzles in the 2D realm, fight enemies, and collect items to aid them in their quest. The Plucky Squire is a truly unique and creative game that PlayStation Plus subscribers should definitely check out.

An Indie Horror Like No Other

Inscryption is the psychological horror that has to be seen to be believed. Its mind-bending mix of genres makes it one of the most unique indie experiences on PlayStation Plus and a must-play, especially for horror fans. Inscryption is a deckbuilding roguelite at its core, but it is frankly so much more than that.
