why Pirates 6 has taken so long is complex, especially after a slew of controversies with franchise star Johnny Depp. However, Disney still seems committed to making another movie, and there is a clear new way forward.
The latest installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017, and ended with a post-credits scene that teased the return of Davy Jones alongside other franchise stars. Dead Men Tell was originally planned to shoot alongside a sixth film, but that changed early in production, with plans for another sequel to follow being set up at that film's end. However, after some controversies came to light with Depp, and following many difficulties in Hollywood since, including the COVID-19 pandemic and various strikes, Pirates 6 has remained stuck in development for some time.
Disney Has Been Developing Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 & A POTC Reboot In Recent Years
The Studio Really Wants To Keep The Pirates Franchise Alive
Regardless of opinions about the star, it is certain that a Pirates 6 starring Johnny Depp would cause controversy. Navigating his complex legal troubles and reputation led to Disney's ability to get this film into production more complicated. While that project still seems to be being worked on in some capacity, and Jack Sparrow will likely someday return to the big screen, Disney has also been trying to start a different Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Margot Robbie’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Spinoff Already Has 1 Major Obstacle To Overcome
Margot Robbie's Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff received a positive update; however, the movie already has one major obstacle to overcome.
Pirates for some time, and updates from 2024 suggest that the film is a priority for Disney. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared that there were hopes to make two movies, which were the reboot and the Robbie-led movie. Read his full comment below:
"It's two different movies. We hope to get 'em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too."
After the success of Barbie, Robbie's stardom in Hollywood has only risen, and it makes sense that the studio hopes to build a new iteration of one of its biggest franchises around her. While details concerning the story and writers have been in flux, the new film has been pitched as a reboot of the property and would not have ties to the stories involving Jack Sparrow.
Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 Should Combine Margot Robbie's Movie With Jack Sparrow
Bringing In Both Iterations Could Result In An Exciting New Path Forward
The best move forward for the franchise could actually be to combine the studio's ideas and have Pirates 6 see Robbie and Depp lead the film. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is one of the best movies that Disney made in the 2000s, but the franchise subsequently had many highs and lows. While Jack Sparrow began as a compelling hero, his goofy bumbling was given greater focus in the follow-ups and may be played out at this point.
There was a rumor that Ayo Edebiri would have the lead role in a female-led Pirates 6, but that has since been debunked.
Bringing in Robbie and Depp for Pirates 6 could create the opportunity for the ing of the torch into a new franchise and provide a resonant ending for Jack Sparrow. There are many exciting characters and faces in this world of pirates, including Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan, and there is no reason to throw out the universe altogether. With both films still in development, the right move might be to combine the two projects into one.
Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 Can Bridge Two Eras Of The Franchise By Using Margot Robbie & Jack Sparrow
Pirates 6 Could See The Franchise The Torch
Another Pirates of the Caribbean starring Depp might still have some life in it, but the franchise needs to find a new direction to stay relevant. Telling one last story that involves Jack Sparrow, but having the film the torch to a new generation of characters, could be the best way to do this. Whether Robbie plays a pirate like Redd from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride or a new kind of character, she certainly has the star power and charisma to lead a franchise like this.

Jack Sparrow was intended for more stories, and the series needs at least one more with him involved to close off the first chapter in the Pirates saga. However, using that same project to launch a new series, with a new cast of characters, could be a perfect way to revitalize the franchise. Featuring someone as charismatic and talented as Robbie at the center of that new franchise iteration could be the perfect way for Pirates to continue to rule the box office.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: 5 Real Pirates Who Have Never Appeared In The Movies (But Should Be In Pirates 6)
Pirates of the Caribbean isn't the most historically accurate franchise, but these 5 real-life pirates would be perfect additions to POTC 6.
Another Pirates of the Caribbean movie will surely be made at some point, and combining the two projects that Disney has been working on for the better part of a decade might be the best way to do this. Robbie and Depp could share some excellent screen time as the series sets itself up to be something fresh and new in Pirates of the Caribbean 6. By finally combining these two ideas, the new film might finally discover its best path forward.
