  • The new game marks a welcome return for a franchise dormant since 2005's Perfect Dark Zero.

Gameplay for the Perfect Dark reboot from developers The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics has finally been revealed, years after it was originally teased at The Game Awards 2020. Perfect Dark has a strong first-person shooter legacy, with the first game being developed by Rare and releasing on the Nintendo 64 to critical acclaim. The franchise has been dormant since 2005's Perfect Dark Zero, making the new game a welcome return.

The Xbox Games Showcase featured a new Perfect Dark gameplay reveal trailer, highlighting the game's new look and futuristic world. Like previous Perfect Dark games, first-person gunplay appears to be a core feature, but it's only one piece of the equation this time around.

Despite some major changes, Perfect Dark still focuses on the series' standard protagonist, Agent Joanna Dark, who appears to be just as skilled of an operative as always.

Perfect Dark Could Give The Series New Life

A Change In The Formula Looks Genuinely Refreshing

Perfect Dark gameplay showing a first-person view of Joanna Dark sliding with enemies pointing guns in her direction.

Perfect Dark's trailer highlights a number of elements that seem more in line with immersive sim games like Deus Ex and Dishonored, establishing an expanded scope from the previous titles in the series. The trailer speeds through a mission with the goal of stopping an attack from a man named Carrington, starting with tracking down his whereabouts in a solarpunk metropolis called Garden City. Getting to his alleged location requires both reconnaissance and platforming, with a pistol finally coming into play once Joanna is inside the building.

When it comes to the combat, the environment really starts to come into play, and there's a dash of parkour and freerunning action like Mirror's Edge in the mix. Joanna blasts one combatant through a balcony railing before leaping after him to stomp him to the ground and take his rifle. She also slides into enemies, takes cover behind market stalls, and shoots objects for makeshift smoke grenades, revealing a lot of room for experimentation. Just how deep these systems could go remains unseen, but it's definitely a promising slice of the action.

Although Perfect Dark might not be a completely direct evolution from the prior games, it does look like it builds on the creative level design and tight action that the series is known for. It might be some time before more details about its revamped futuristic world are revealed, and a reality-shifting tease at the end of the trailer points things in a particularly interesting and ominous direction. There's still no release date for Perfect Dark, but after years of troubled development, seeing it in action finally offers some concrete proof after troubled development that it's really on its way.
