Percy Jackson & the Olympians episode 7 will see Poseidon and Sally share the screen in a change from the books. Based on writer Rick Riordan's series of Greek mythology-infused young adult novels, season 1 of the Disney+ show adapts book one, The Lightning Thief. In the 2005 novel, Percy (Walker Scobell) learns that he is the son of Poseidon (Toby Stephens), a fact which puts himself and his loved ones in danger. Percy, who was raised by his single mother Sally (Virginia Kull) and has an antagonistic relationship with his stepfather, seeks to learn more about his dad despite struggling with complex feelings about the god.
While speaking with Percy Jackson episode 7, a scene which did not take place in the book series. During a conversation about the recontextualized Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy) scene that took place in episode 3, the pair discussed Sally and Medusa's similarities in that they both "dated the same guy and had very different experiences," teasing a continuation of this theme later on. Check out what Riordan and Steinberg had to say below:
Riordan: “There’s a third act to that subplot of Medusa and Poseidon and Sally that you haven’t seen it yet. It comes in Episode 7, a really powerful flashback scene where you see Sally and Poseidon together."
Steinberg: “What’s most interesting to me [about Episode 3] is where it positions Medusa with respect to Sally, and an awareness that they both dated the same guy and had very different experiences. I like that the story perceives that relationship from Percy’s point of view. It’s not entirely clear: Did they love each other? It seems like they did, but what went wrong? Did anything go wrong? Is it possible that Medusa had an awful experience with Poseidon and Sally didn’t? It was important to leave that a mystery, but to not leave it unaddressed. As we get deeper into the season, yes, this is Percy’s adventure, but parenting that kid is an adventure unto itself. A scary one. We wanted to tell that story too, and I don’t think you can tell that story without understanding what Poseidon and Sally were to each other. Long story short: They had a complicated relationship.”
Is Poseidon In Disney+'s Percy Jackson Different From The Books?
The new Percy Jackson series, which currently has three episodes streaming on Disney+, has introduced a handful of changes from the books, several of which are the result of a deeper exploration of the source material. Percy Jackson episode 3's Medusa change is one example of this, bringing to life a more nuanced and tragic rendition of the character. While Stephens, who appeared in the Percy Jackson trailer, is similar to the book's version of Poseidon, a few hints have already indicated that the show's version of the god may differ from his book counterpart.
For example, the pilot has a scene that was not in the books depicting Sally sitting in the rain, likely reminiscing about her time with Percy's father. This brief moment indicates that Sally misses Poseidon, especially in comparison to her unpleasant husband Gabe (Timm Sharp). However, Sally's wistfulness for her time with the sea god contrasts with the show's new, more tragic picture of Medusa, which implies a great wrong done by Percy's father.

68 Biggest Changes Disney's Percy Jackson Show Makes To The Books
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is being praised for its fidelity to the source material, though that does not mean there are no changes to the books.
These contrasting narratives feed into Riordan and Steinberg's discussion of the flashback between Sally and Poseidon in episode 7, which takes advantage of the new on-screen medium to show viewers things that Percy as the narrator would not have known. While Sally and Medusa may have known two different versions of Poseidon, Percy will know a completely different iteration of the god as his father, and these complex and layered portraits of Poseidon are very in line with the book's version of the character, despite new information arising. However, time will tell if the show paints a new picture of Poseidon once he appears in Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 1.
New episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians air Tuesdays on Disney+.
