Summary

  • A Dance of Masks DLC for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous releases on June 13 with new features and an epilogue approach.
  • The expansion brings personal events, voice acting, new archetypes, and a unique weapon update for players to enjoy.
  • The final DLC leads players back to Kenabres for fun activities, introduces a new enemy stronghold, and offers high-level arena combat.

Wrath of the Righteous improves on its predecessor Kingmaker and cleans up a lot of sticking points for a standout experience in many regards. It's no surprise that it's become a platform for a substantial serving of DLC, but all good things must eventually come to an end.

The base game of Wrath of the Righteous tells the story of a war against demons who pour forth from the Abyss through a rift found in a wasteland called the Worldwound. In typical adventuring fashion, the party has the opportunity to strive for victory in this conflict, but there are any number of ways that the story can go. The game might boast even more possibilities for less-than-moral options than the tabletop version of the campaign directly s, although striving for a fully heroic path is as appealing as ever.

A Dance Of Masks DLC Arrives This Summer

The Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous DLC A Dance of Masks is releasing for PC and consoles on June 13, almost seven months after the November 2023 release of the fifth expansion The Lord of Nothing. A Dance of Masks can be purchased at launch as a standalone addition, but it's also accessible through Wrath of the Righteous's Season 2. Based on the pricing for prior story expansions, a $12.99 price can be expected, while investing in the complete Season 2 costs $28.99 for the latter three DLCs in a package.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous expansions mostly tell their own stories, so it's not necessary to play the others before diving into A Dance of Masks.

After some ventures into other lands scattered throughout other DLCs, A Dance of Masks takes the Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous party back to the crusader city of Kenabres in the Worldwound. While this location was the center of some earthshaking events in the main game, A Dance of Masks looks to be a less stressful affair. The general concept of the expansion seems to be akin to a final celebration session in tabletop play, where fun activities and a festival air make it possible to unwind after the climactic events of the campaign.

It's not easy to get the Secret Ending to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and there are plenty of conditions the player will need to meet.

That isn't to say that A Dance of Masks won't come with its own threats, even if the nature of them hasn't yet been fully revealed. A "new enemy's stronghold" will apparently feature in the DLC alongside the rebuilt Kenabres, which will presumably provide enough danger to challenge high-level characters. All the same, it shouldn't be a grueling survival experience like the Through the Ashes DLC, as the focus seems to be on the fun.

The joys of combat can also be found in a new arena, which sounds like its set to pull in some stranger high-level enemies that aren't usually found anywhere near Kenabres. Although this won't offer as much new narrative as arranging these foes into dungeon sequences would, it should make it easier to cram challenges into the scope of a last hurrah DLC. Winning arena fights also seems like the perfect opportunity to earn exciting rewards, whether that ends up coming in the form of cash prizes, magic items, or unique cutscenes.

What's really exciting about A Dance of Masks is the list of new features that it introduces to Wrath of the Righteous, some of which fulfill long-running requests from the community. Fans of the game's memorable companions should have a lot to love in the inclusion of personal and romantic events for each eligible character, fleshing out the more casual side of these battle-hardened adventurers.

The bigger surprise is the addition of fully voiced dialogues, a feature notably included in Baldur's Gate 3 but typically absent from classically-styled CRPGs. Including it for DLC is a lot more manageable than wrangling it for an entire adventure, so A Dance of Masks adding full voice acting to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous for the first time feels like less of a missed opportunity and more of a final treat.

Also included is a line-up of 11 new character archetypes, a substantial addition to the dizzying array of options available in Wrath of the Righteous. While Pathfinder: Kingmaker fell slightly short of fifty total archetypes, the base game of Wrath of the Righteous more than tripled that, and previous DLC appended even more choices. The list of archetypes hasn't yet been confirmed, but it could easily be another incentive for veteran players to go back to the drawing board and sketch up some new character ideas.

Lastly, there's a small weapon update coming, pairing a new weapon with a feature to swap between one-handed and two-handed grips. Although it's not entirely clear if this ability applies to other weapons, it's a common enough request that adding the animations would make sense. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has its fair share of mods to tweak how weapons work, but expanding the official would go a long way.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous's DLC era has been somewhat hit or miss, with certain expansions proving more satisfying overall than others. A Dance of Masks sounds like a good package, however, and it's nice to see that there's a little something for everyone included. Saying goodbye to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous won't be easy, but having the opportunity for a proper farewell is certainly something that can be appreciated.
