Amazon Prime has made big moves, Disney+ is enjoying huge success with its MCU content, and HBO Max will stream every Warner Bros. cinematic release in 2021 simultaneously with theaters. Hollywood was already leaning increasingly towards the streaming model, but the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically accelerated that trend.
Launched in 2014, ViacomCBS' entrant in the streaming arena was previously CBS All Access. The platform has effectively been upheld by its original Paramount Plus will see a renewed focus on original material, and theatrical releases will hit the subscription service mere weeks after cinemas. One of the biggest headlines is Paramount's decision to drop blockbuster tentpoles on its new service so soon after the theatrical window. Cinema chains will undoubtedly argue that the non-existent gap will deter movie fans from going to the cinema when getting a Paramount Plus subscription offers the most high-profile movies so quickly. With Warner Bros. releasing its 2021 output simultaneously, however, Paramount Plus is at least throwing theaters a partial lifeline, and the strategy may be reviewed once coronavirus restrictions are safely lifted across the world.
