According to Obsidian Entertainment, the company was very surprised to learn how well multitude of positive reviews from both critics and long-time Obsidian fans alike thanks to the game's well-written dialog, emphasis on player choice, and beautifully-stylized environments dripping with satirical humor.

While first billed as a spiritual sequel to the Obsidian-developed-but-Microsoft's purchase of Obsidian Entertainment late last year, the company still plans to bring their much-praised sci-fi RPG to Nintendo's console sometime in 2020.

As first revealed in a podcast by USGamer, projects leads at Obsidian Entertainment had no idea a version of their game would be possible on the Nintendo Switch. The Outer World's co-game director Leonard Boyarsky stated during the episode "We weren't sure it could be done," and said the Switch version of the game was being handled externally by a different team. However, once other developers starting releasing their titles on the Nintendo Switch, Obsidian took notice. "They started coming out with all these games on Nintendo Switch, and we thought, 'Wow, that's great.'"
