When Rita Repulsa tried to distract the Rangers with a monster, Trini and Jason inexplicably found themselves trapped inside the portal. The trip through the portal disrupted the Morphin Grid in a way that forced Trini and Jason to switch powers. Trini's time in a Red Ranger suit ultimately foreshadowed Trini's future promotion. On top of allowing a brief romance between the two to blossom, watching how Jason formulated plans up close allowed her to learn firsthand what it took to lead the Power Rangers, before she later led the Omegas.

While hosting a charity bakery for the environment at the Barnes Botanical Garden, Trini and Kimberly were confronted by Vixenya, a villain who turned everyone in the Garden, including Kimberly, into fluffy animals. Alone, Trini didn't fold under pressure, or fight this foe off like any other monster. Trini talked to Vixenya, explaining they were on the same side, both wanting the best for all living creatures. Trini convinced Vixenya to transform everyone back into their normal selves, before she fled into the woods, showcasing that a real leader knows how to determine when fisticuffs aren't necessary in a conflict.

The Black Dragon debuted in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4, confronting the Rangers through Tommy's connection to Rita Repulsa's Green Chaos Crystal. In issue #9, the Black Dragon was destroyed from the inside by Tommy and Billy, but the Rangers kept the armor that the monster left behind. Several issues later, Rita created an army of Goldars, all stronger than the original. To combat this, Trini put her often understated tech skills to good use, by reprogramming the Black Dragon into armor that gave her the exact strength she needed to topple several Goldars at once.

Following Lord Drakkon's defeat in the post-apocalyptic World of the Coinless, Trini became desperate as new forces of evil emerged to threaten the resistance. With no resources to protect them, Trini's last resort was to conjure Rita Repulsa to help them. This worked for a short time, until predictably, the space witch betrayed them. A real leader its when they're wrong, and not only did Trini take ability, she was efficient enough to correct her mistake. Using Rita's scepter, Trini permanently killed the Rangers antagonist. For her efforts, she was appointed as Kimberly's right-hand woman in her post-Drakkon regime.

Go Go Power Rangers: Back to School #1 (written by Marguerite Bennett)
As depicted in Go Go Power Rangers: Back to School #1, Trini spent a week-long vacation at the Northwind Ranch, helping raise rescue horses. Her biggest test came when a storm blew their fence open, and one of these horses – Pineapple, Trini's favorite – escaped. An extensive search resulted in Trini finding Pineapple trapped at the bottom of the canyon, nearly mauled by wolves. After Trini shooed the wolves away, it turned out the only means to retrieve Pineapple was for Trini to carry her up the canyon. Trini expressed grit and determination, invaluable leadership qualities, to save Pineapple's life.

In another attempted vacation gone awry, Trini was spending time with her family in the small town of Boulder Cliff when a meteor crash-landed. It not only grabbed the attention of Trini, but of Rita Repulsa, who sent Goldar down to Earth to retrieve its contents. Goldar grew into a giant, but the meteor interfered with communications, preventing Trini from calling the Rangers for backup. Instead, she improvised like true leader would, bravely taking Goldar head-on by herself, and managing to be effective at normal size. Ultimately, Trini defeated the giant by knocking him out by rolling a massive boulder onto his head.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #50 (written by Ryan Parrott, with art Daniele Di Nicuolo)
When Trini, Zack, and Jason were appointed as the new Omega Rangers, Kiya Kyatyl of the planet Khoodjah was chosen as their Blue Ranger. However, she quickly grew paranoid that this world's Tommy Oliver could one day transform into another Lord Drakkon, the despot who enslaved the alternate universe of the Coinless. She began to distrust all Power Rangers, building a rogue team of evildoers to destroy them all. When Kiya's betrayal was uncovered, it resulted in a one-on-one fight between her and Trini, who effectively put an end to the "Necessary Evil" story arc by defeating Kiya, asserting herself as a dominant Omega Ranger.

The trio of former Power Rangers opened the premiere issue of their Boom! Studios ongoing series by training together in space under zero gravity conditions. While Jason and Zack struggled to collect themselves under these conditions, Trini quickly proved to be a natural in zero-gravity. Better yet, when it came to the sparring portion of their training, she had no problem mopping the floor with the former leader and second-in-command. Trini may not have received as big a spotlight on the classic 1990s team as Zack or Jason, but she was just as capable as a fighter.

When Trini, Zack, and Jason begrudgingly decided they needed former psychotic overlord Drakkon's help, in order to defeat the Empyreals, the Omega Rangers allowed the villainous variant of Tommy Oliver to stow away on their ship. Alas, Lord Drakkon remained up to his old tricks, as revealed when he talked to the original Yellow Ranger. He told that Trini she should be the one calling the shots for the Omega Rangers, ironically foreshadowing her eventual ascent to Red Ranger. Trini, though, showcased her leadership potential by not giving into Drakkon's plans, or letting him manipulate her.

When all hope was lost, and the Omegas were out of options to defeat the Empyreals, Lord Drakkon made one last suggestion: the dead. The Red and Blue Emissaries of the God-tier Emissaries Three were dead, and the last remaining Emissary wasn't easy to get through to. Drakkon, however, explained that since they are bound to the Morphin Grid, the Rangers could the Emissaries by morphing. The means of wasn't easy, but through sheer grit, determination, and never giving up, Trini proved successful, once again highlighting why she's worthy of leading the Power Rangers.
