Summary

Only Murders in the Building season 4 premiere, he initially thinks it is Sazz, only to see that it is Bakula, who shares that Sazz never showed up for the pilot they were supposed to film together.

While speaking with TVLine, Hoffman explains how Bakula's season 4 cameo came to fruition and reveals whether he will appear again in season 4. Prior to this, Hoffman shared that Bakula was "completely aware" of the series' multiple references to him during the Hulu series' previous seasons. The series co-creator also teases that Bakula is only one of several casting surprises to come in season 4. Check out Hoffman's comments below:

I saw Scott in a fantastic musical [The Connector] in New York that he was doing right before he came to shoot with us this season. I had a nice chat with him about all of this, and he was so game. He was like, "I’m so excited to be a part of it, even in this small way," which was basically all we could get with him [for Season 4]. The real coup is that there are a couple of surprises we’ve withheld this season — he’s one, right at the top — and he happily agreed not to talk about it until Episode 1 airs.

Season 4 Features Only Murders In The Building's Best Celebrity Casting Yet

The Celebrities Playing Themselves Are A Bigger Part Of The Story

Only Murders in the Building's casts have included celebrities playing themselves since season 1, when Sting temporarily became a suspect in the investigation of Tim Kono's death. The series continues this trend with Amy Schumer playing herself in season 2 and Matthew Broderick playing himself in season 3. Season 4 has taken the celebrity casting to new heights, not only with the Bakula cameo, but with Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, and Eva Longoria portraying Charles, Oliver, and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) for an Hollywood film.

Now that Charles, Oliver, and Mabel know that Sazz was killed and is not just missing, a new investigation will begin, with Levy, Galifianakis, and Longoria making themselves part of the investigation as well.

Levy, Galifianakis, and Longoria were not just cameos in the season 4 premiere and have been set up to be major characters as the season continues. In addition to the three stars playing themselves, they are trying to mimic each member of the podcasting trio. This has already led to an uncomfortable and amusing dynamic as they try to insert themselves into the lives and conversations that Charles, Oliver, and Mabel have, a dynamic that is poised to continue later in the season.

Now that Charles, Oliver, and Mabel know that Sazz was killed and is not just missing, a new investigation will begin, with Levy, Galifianakis, and Longoria making themselves part of the investigation as well. While they may only be there for humor, one or more of them could end up being part of the mystery behind Sazz's death, especially with Sazz's longtime history in Hollywood. Bakula, Levy, Galifianakis, Longoria, and more celebrities on the way make Only Murders in the Building's return one of the show's most exciting seasons yet.
