One Piece Odyssey is a turn-based JRPG that's coming to PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, which are all systems that Dragon Quest 11 is available on, so there are no massive technical gaps between the games, even if Dragon Quest 11 is several years old at this point. It's unclear if One Piece Odyssey will launch on the Nintendo Switch, but it seems likely, considering the system's massive audience in Japan, as well as One Piece being incredibly popular in the country.

One Piece Odyssey is a video game that features a story and original characters created by One Piece author Eiichiro Oda. The story follows the Straw Hat Pirates at a point in time that is after the time skip, but before when Jimbei officially ed the crew, as he has yet to be spotted in any of the trailers. The crew becomes shipwrecked on a mysterious island, separating Monkey D. Luffy from the rest of his crew. He must search the island for his missing friends, but it won't be easy, as the ruins there are protected by wild animals, as well as bizarre golem-like creatures.

The characters in One Piece Odyssey all reflect their anime and manga counterparts, yet fans have noticed that the game bears a striking resemblance to Dragon Quest 11. The mainline Dragon Quest games are not inspired by any individual anime, though they have a strong connection to one of the most popular manga and anime franchises of all time - through Akira Toriyama. It's not surprising that there are visual similarities to One Piece Odyssey, but there is another reason why the two games look alike.

One Piece Odyssey & Dragon Quest 11 Share A Developer

Both One Piece Odyssey and Dragon Quest 11 are developed by the same company - ILCA, which is the same studio that developed Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl for the Nintendo Switch. The two games share a similar gameplay style, and they're both developed using Unreal Engine 4, so it wouldn't be surprising to learn if ILCA reused assets and changed them, in order to cut down on development time for One Piece Odyssey. ILCA is known for making anime-style games, as it's also the studio that worked on Code Vein and The Idolm@ster: Starlit Season, so this type of game is its specialty.

The other reason there are similarities is due to artwork. The character and monster designs in the Dragon Quest series are mostly created by Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball. Oda has cited Toriyama as one of his biggest influences and the two have even collaborated on One Piece/Dragon Ball crossovers in the past. Toriyama's work was a huge influence on Oda, so it's no surprise that there would be similarities in their artwork and their character designs. ILCA did a great job bringing Toriyama's artwork to life in Dragon Quest 11 and they appear to be doing just as good a job with One Piece Odyssey.
