Summary

  • One Piece anime episode #1093 showcases the potential of good filler material to make villains more intimidating than in the manga.
  • The episode includes an anime-only scene featuring a flashback battle between Kuzan and Cracker, which adds depth to the storyline.
  • The filler scene demonstrates the effectiveness of exploring characters and events not covered in the manga, highlighting the skill of the anime team.

Blackbeard who proved to be One Piece's greatest threat. However, an anime-only scene in the episode proved the true potential of the anime with incredibly dramatic and epic action.

During the large-scale battle between Law's Heart Pirates and several Blackbeard crew , the latter's ship takes its share of attacks. One scene showed a captive on board the vessel, none other than Charlotte Pudding from Whole Cake Island. Through her perspective, viewers would see a flashback of the brutal battle to steal her, a confrontation the manga only touched on in a cover story.

One Piece manga chapters #1062 - #1064 featured covers depicting sections of Whole Cake Island and of the Big Mom Pirates like Charlotte Cracker frozen solid. The island was attacked by Blackbeard crew Van Augur and former Marine iral Kuzan. The entire scene was animated and directed beautifully in episode #1093 with an intense battle manga readers did not see.

The cinematic flashback featured a haunting experience for one of the Big Mom crew's strongest fighters, Charlotte Cracker, who nearly defeated Luffy. Blackbeard's sniper decimated Cracker's biscuit soldiers with a single shot, foes who had a level of defense that Luffy needed Gear 4 to crack. The Whole Cake Island protector's shock was replaced with horror when Kuzan started to use his ice powers that froze everyone in his way. Pudding and her ability to read the mysterious Poneglyphs are now under Blackbeard's control.

The animator who brought the stunning scene to life was Henry Thurlow, who previously directed the peak of Law and Kid's massive battle against Big Mom in One Piece episode #1066.

Many anime flashbacks regurgitate previously shown scenes used to remind fans of important information, which is sometimes helpful when watching a series week to week. At worst, flashbacks are used to pad time and can horrifically interfere with a series' dramatic pacing. However, One Piece episode #1093 did the opposite with its flashback, making Blackbeard's Sniper Van Augur more imposing and the crew's newest Titanic Captain Kuzan cooler than ever. The scene proved that filler can be used effectively to further explore One Piece's treasure trove of characters and events the manga did not have time to cover.

Not all of author Eiichiro Oda's cover stories contain the impact that episode #1093's extra scene contained. Blackbeard now has control over Pudding, and her abilities will likely have a significant role in One Piece's final saga, so it makes sense why Kuzan and Van Augur's scene was adapted and expanded upon. Still, the chilling scene that was previously only a few manga s allowed One Piece's anime team to flex their skills and prove how to do filler material right.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a multimedia franchise that began as a manga series and follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as led by Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy, an enthusiastic pirate with a thirst for adventure, is afflicted by a mysterious curse that gives him various powers he uses to protect himself and his friends. The manga eventually gave way to the anime series, with the two being some of history's longest-running anime and manga series. Along with over fifty video games made over the years, the series entered the live-action world with Netflix's 2023 adaptation.
