one of Blackbeard's Titanic Captains.
Law and Blackbeard's anticipated fight in One Piece episode #1093 got much well-deserved attention from the series fanbase, which has been eating well with several incredible episodes in the past few months. However, one of the episode's most pleasant surprises included an intense action scene not seen in the manga that saw the intimidating strength of Blackbeard's Sniper Van Augur.
The manga briefly showed the Blackbeard Pirate's abduction of Pudding, the reveal of Kuzan's new allegiance, and the freezing of Charlotte Cracker with single- cover stories. Thankfully, episode #1093 showed the epic confrontation and defeat of Cracker by Van Augur and Kuzan's hands, a foe whose incredible defenses required one of Luffy's most robust forms to crack.
The entire scene on Whole Cake Island in episode #1093 was animated by Henry Thurlow, a very talented artist who now works for Toei in Japan. He became the first American to ever direct an anime episode, which was episode #1066, Kid and Law's dramatic battle against Big Mom.
Luffy Needed Gear 4 To Break Cracker's Soldiers; Van Augur Did It In Seconds
One Piece created by Eiichiro Oda, anime produced by Toei Animation
Cracker was one of the Big Mom Pirate's toughest fighters and part of the family's Three Sweet Commanders, a title also held by Katakuri. During the Whole Cake Island arc, he assaulted Luffy and Nami after they became trapped in the island's Seducing Woods. He fought against Luffy for 11 hours and was able to create countless biscuit soldiers that required Gear 4 levels of strength to crush. Van Augur obliterated these soldiers with a single shot in One Piece episode #1093. It's unknown if Augur uses haki-infused attacks, but such impact makes that theory likely.
Van Augur has previously accomplished incredible marksmen feats such as sniping seagulls from an island that was so far away it was out of sight.
Like many of the pirates on Blackbeard's crew, the full scope of Van Augur's abilities has yet to be tested. Still, whenever he is involved in a scene, the anime gives him more to do and makes the character seem like the most excellent sharpshooter in the One Piece world. His already supernatural marksman skills are even more impressive when combined with his teleporting Warp-Fruit. It would take someone with incredible Observation Haki skills to even stand a chance against a sniper of Van Augur's abilities.

One Piece's 25 Strongest Devil Fruits (So Far)
One Piece has revealed a myriad of Devil Fruits thus far, but these 25 are stronger than the rest by a pretty wide margin.
The One Piece Anime Can Gain A Lot By Expanding The Cover Stories
Eiichiro Oda's chapter covers often include silly requests from fans around the world; other times, they include world-building scenes that have repercussions for the future of the series. Cover stories have explored topics like what happened to Skypiea's Lightning-Logia villain Enel and the glimpse of the Whole Cake Island confrontation that episode #1093 expanded upon. By giving the important moment more time and focus in the anime, anime-only viewers have a better understanding and fear of characters like Van Augur than the One Piece manga has presented.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a multimedia franchise that began as a manga series and follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as led by Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy, an enthusiastic pirate with a thirst for adventure, is afflicted by a mysterious curse that gives him various powers he uses to protect himself and his friends. The manga eventually gave way to the anime series, with the two being some of history's longest-running anime and manga series. Along with over fifty video games made over the years, the series entered the live-action world with Netflix's 2023 adaptation.
