The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has proven to be a hit, and luckily for PC players, it's just as accommodating to mods as the original release. Mods can often be ambitious, but one very small change made by a mod has become something of a required for players who want to immerse themselves in Oblivion's roleplaying.

Nexus Mods Wong4Sik1 has created Wonger's Shield on Back, a mod that simply allows you to put your shield on your character's back. The creator even calls it "A super simple mod that will put the shield on the player's back rather than the arm." It may be a relatively small change, with virtually no mechanical consequences, but the comments on Nexus Mods are raving about it. "Thank you greatly! This mod is a must-have for me," says AntarestLYA, "whenever I use shields, having to carry a shield constantly in my hand looks so much worse, especially when a character is sprinting."

A Small But Impactful Change

At the time of writing, the Shield on Back mod is approaching 9,000 s in just five days, having been ed to Nexus Mods on May 4. s in the comments are even reporting that the mod acts as an incidental bug fix for shields getting stuck to a character's arm after equipping a bow, a nice bonus compared to Oblivion Remastered mods that might not even work. Practically the only complaint in the comments is that the shield is a bit too high on the character's back, but most agree it's easy to look past.

Oblivion is a game that can benefit from being played slowly and really immersing yourself in the setting, and even small mods like this can help players embody their character. There's a lot of walking around cities and chatting with NPCs in Oblivion, and it can be genuinely distracting for your character to have a shield strapped to their arm the entire time. Oblivion Remastered weapon mods have proven popular in the game's first few weeks, helping players on PC fine-tune their experience.

The Perfect Change For A Remaster

Oblivion Remastered changed the original in more ways than you might expect from a remaster, but the option to put your shield on your character's back almost feels like an oversight. Walking around with your shield constantly on your wrist was a quirk of the original game too, and it seems like an obvious feature to integrate for immersion's sake. Especially with the improvements to Oblivion's third-person mode, many players are likely frustrated at always having their shield out.

I am always equipping other items to get rid of my shield when I'm not in combat. I'll usually equip a bow, which stows neatly on the back, or a torch if it's dark out. Running around in full armor is already overtly unrealistic (to be fair, The Elder Scrolls isn't known for realism), but it's particularly grating to see my character with a shield equipped even when I'm just in a shop chatting with NPCs. This simple mod is a godsend for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered players who are tired of wrestling with the shield on their character's arm.
