It's no secret that the Nintendo Switch's hardware is becoming more dated as the system struggles to run most third-party AAA releases without some major graphical downgrades. Back when it launched in 2017, the hybrid console was already underpowered when compared to the likes of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the performance gap only became more severe when the current generation started in 2020. Reports have speculated that the company is looking to beefy up the hardware in its next console but how it does this without sacrificing portability remains unknown.

It's entirely possible that the Switch 2 ditches the hybrid design for a more traditional home console design but the ability to switch between docked and handheld modes is the machine's biggest selling point. Rumors have swirled that the new version of the handheld consoles like the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion, it remains to be seen whether Nintendo aims to take on these significantly more powerful devices.

The Nintendo Switch may be significantly weaker when compared to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but its library of exclusive franchises is so strong that it needn't worry about competing with the likes of Sony and Microsoft.

In the near future, Nintendo's forthcoming Direct will shine the spotlight on some of the final games launching for the original Nintendo Switch which already sports an impressive line-up of titles. In of what can be expected from the showcase, Metroid fans are anticipating some kind of update regarding the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4. The Super Mario Bros. community is likely also expecting a new 3D platformer given that the last one, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, was released in 2021 and was largely a remastered version of the WiiU classic.
