Summary
- Night Court has already lost multiple main cast after only two seasons, which mirrors the original Night Court's rotating cast.
- In the early days of Night Court, it was common for at least one series regular to leave after just one season.
- The original Night Court's nine-season run suggests the reboot can survive despite continuous character departures.
By losing another main cast member ahead of season 3, Night Court is repeating a trend from the original NBC sitcom of the same name. Created by Reinhold Weege, Night Court originally aired from 1984-1992 and followed Judge Harry Stone (Harry Anderson) and the rest of the night shift crew at Manhattan Criminal Court. In 2023, a revival was developed by Dan Rubin and Melissa Rauch about Harry Stone's daughter, Abby (Rauch), following in her late father's footsteps. John Larroquette, who played ADA Dan Fielding in the original series, returned as a public defender at Abby's court.
After a stressful wait, Night Court was finally renewed for season 3 in May 2024. Unlike season 2, which was announced only a month after season 1 premiered in January 2023, Night Court season 3 wasn't confirmed until many months later. While the renewal was a relief, it also came with the news that yet another member of the Night Court cast will not be returning for season 3, following a pattern from the original show.
No official release date for Night Court season 3 has been announced.
Night Court's Season 3 Cast Exits Mirror The Original Show's Rotating Cast
The Original Night Court Saw A Lot Of Actors Come & Go
The same day that season 3 was confirmed, Night Court star India de Beaufort announced that she would not be reprising her role as ADA Olivia Moore in the future. Olivia served as the prosecutor for Abby's court for the first two seasons of Night Court, taking over Larroquette's role in the original series. India de Beaufort's exit from Night Court marks the reboot's second main character loss since it premiered in January 2023. After playing Abby's clerk Neil in Night Court season 1, Kapil Talwalkar opted not to return for season 2.
Following Talwalkar's departure, Nyambi Nyambi, who plays fellow court clerk Wyatt Shaw, was promoted to series regular on Night Court to fill Neil's role.
Losing at least one main character per season was par for the course in the early days of the original Night Court.
With these major cast departures, Night Court is actually following in the OG series' footsteps. Losing at least one main character per season was par for the course in the early days of the original Night Court. In fact, the only series regulars to appear in all nine seasons of Night Court were Larroquette, Anderson, and Richard Moll, who played bailiff Bull Shannon.
It was very common for a cast member to appear in one season and be gone the next, and not just the leads—several actors in recurring roles bid farewell after just a season or two. In some cases, though, the actor had sadly ed away during their run. For instance, after playing bailiff Selma Hacker in seasons 1-2 of Night Court, Selma Diamond died of lung cancer on May 13, 1985, at 64. The following year, Florence Halop, who played bailiff Flo Kleiner on season 3 of Night Court, also died of lung cancer on July 15, 1986, at 63.

10 Classic Night Court Characters That Can Still Return In The Revival
With NBC’s Night Court revival renewed for Season 2, the way has been opened for the return of more characters from the original courtroom comedy.
The Original Night Court Proves The Reboot Can Survive Season 3's Exits
Night Court Maintained Longevity Despite Its Revolving Door Of Cast
While de Beaufort's exit as Olivia could mean trouble for Night Court season 3, the pattern that her absence creates may not be cause for concern. If the original series' lengthy run is any indication, losing principal characters back-to-back is hardly a death sentence for Night Court. The original Night Court ran for a whole nine seasons, all but the first of which contained upwards of 20 episodes each.
Of course, the network television landscape is a lot harsher today than it was in the '80s, and the lingering issue that the Night Court reboot's new characters don't live up to the original cast means that it may not be poised to withstand these losses in the long run like its predecessor. Still, the original Night Court has proven that, at the very least, the general premise is conducive to a rotating cast without affecting the quality. At the moment, Night Court isn't inherently doomed.
