The core duo behind the Nier and Nier: Automata, Yoko Taro, has spent many years working with the series and producer Yosuke Saito was also very involved with the creative process. There is currently no indication what these games will be about or if they are within the Nier universe.

While the original Nier was something of a cult classic in most western countries, Nier: Automata was massively popular with gamers around the world. Automata was so popular in fact that it was just revealed that the game a remake of the original Nier.

Gematsu has now reported that both Yoka Taro and Yosuke Saito have decided to partner up again for another two video games. Neither man revealed what these games would be or even if they would be within the Nier series, but it seems that Taro is much more excited about the prospects than Saito is. Apparently, Saito rejected Taro's original idea for a new game and it took an hour long presentation to bring Saito on board. Saito is still reluctantly attached to this title though as he mentioned that if he was allowed to back out he probably would. Luckily, both men seem excited to be working on the second title that is in development.

The Nier series does have a long and convoluted history that leaves a lot of room for more entries in the franchise. The series originally began back in 2003 with Drakengard which was set in an alternate version of Medieval Europe. This game had several different endings and each of the following games are continuations of different endings. Essentially this means that all of the games in this franchise exist in the same universe but different timelines and time periods. This is why there is such a big difference between the medieval aspects of Drakengard and the futuristic world of Nier: Automata.

While there are definitely ways for Taro and Saito to fit other games within the Nier universe, it still isn't clear if these new games will be within it. For all anyone knows at this time these two new titles will be their own separate IPs that create new sprawling franchises. Either way Nier fans should be excited to see what this pair is working on next.
