Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ rock duo, Tenacious D, has released a new song that celebrates video games, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, the Mario franchise, and many other hit titles in the industry. Tenacious D is known for its comedy songs, and "Video Games" is no different, as it plays around with gaming culture.

The new "Video Games" song was released on Tenacious D's official YouTube channel this Thursday, May 11. The music video shows animated versions of Black and Gass playing the song and as the lead singer mentions the games he plays, references to them can also be seen.

Throughout the song, Black sings about multiple titles, starting off with God of War, which leads to Gass' character being smashed by a Troll's rune totem. He then proceeds to mention Fallout 4, which features a nuclear explosion in the distance and Gass being killed off once again – this time by a Deathclaw.

Tenacious D’s New Song Confirms Jack Black Still Plays Video Games

Black’s continuous mention of fairly new games in the new Tenacious D song, “Video Games”, just comes to prove that he does, in fact, still play video games. The largest portion of the song is dedicated to Red Dead Redemption 2, which he claims is not a game, but an “incredible journey through old American history.” He is, evidently, being ironic about the statement, despite a comparison between Rockstar’s hit video game and Shakespeare’s works.

After that, a sequence of images is shown, featuring the animated version of Black in multiple video game skins. Among them is Link from The Legend of Zelda franchise, Ryu from Street Fighter, a character from Minecraft, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Kratos from God of War, and even Mega Man. Of course, Tenacious D’s “Video Games” also references Mario and Sonic, two grand staples in gaming. Near the end, Black its that he still plays video games, thus concluding the song.

The musician and Golden Globe nominee actor has notably been involved with gaming culture for quite some time. Back in 2018, for instance, Jack Black started a YouTube channel with his sons called Jablinski Games, which features gaming content. He's also acted in many roles for video game characters, including Psychonauts 2’s Helmut Fullbear and The Mote of Light, and Broken Age’s Harm’ny Lightbeard. His most popular gaming role is that of Brutal Legend’s Eddie Riggs. Most recently, Jack Black played Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and himself in High on Life.
