Mortal Kombat is getting a mobile-based RPG spinoff next year from Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios, one that could take the long-running series in a new direction. The beloved Mortal Kombat franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and the companies behind the beloved 2D fighting game series recently commemorated this with a brutal Mortal Kombat anniversary video.
Of course, fans are likely more interested in hearing about the next Mortal Kombat game. Rumors of a Mortal Kombat 12 have been circulating the internet ever since NetherRealm officially ended for MK 11 last July. However, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon shared an update for fans recently, stating that his studio’s next project will be announced “in due time” and that NetherRealm is currently focusing on the aforementioned Mortal Kombat 30th anniversary celebrations. Now, the next Mortal Kombat game has finally been revealed, but it isn’t the mainline series entry that fans were expecting.
In a press release earlier today, Warner Bros. Games announced Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a new collection role-playing spin-off that is set to launch globally on mobile devices in 2023. Onslaught will feature the Mortal Kombat franchise’s first mobile-exclusive cinematic story, which will task players with building a team of fighters from a vast roster of playable Mortal Kombat characters. These teams must then be unleashed in massive real-time battles to stop a dark and dangerous threat. Ed Boon says that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will push the boundaries of the series and allow longtime fans to experience the franchise in a new way that still stays true to its visceral nature. Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Brings MK Storytelling To Mobile Devices
Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is the second Mortal Kombat mobile game. The first was 2015’s Mortal Kombat Mobile, which was launched alongside Mortal Kombat X and featured simplified 2D fighting mechanics more in-line with what fans know the franchise for. Since its release, Mortal Kombat Mobile has gained more than 150 million installs and is one of the top five most ed fighting games on iOS and Android to date.
Mortal Kombat: Onslaught looks to continue the franchise’s success, following Mortal Kombat 11 selling 12 million copies as of last year. Onslaught will carry the Mortal Kombat torch by immersing players in a portable cinematic experience that combines NetherRealm’s storytelling with strategic team-based RPG gameplay. Not much about Mortal Kombat: Onslaught’s story and gameplay mechanics have been revealed so far, but it seems this mobile spin-off could take Mortal Kombat in an interesting new direction and hold fans over until the eventual announcement of Mortal Kombat 12.
